“Lemons to Lemonade”
When journalist/writer Amy Tenderich overcame the initial shock of being diagnosed type 1 diabetes at age 37, she was determined to manage her disease for maximized quality of life. Turned off by the limitations of the health care system, Amy turned to the internet for information and support. She quickly realized there was a void of high quality content, so she decided to fill the gap herself by launching DiabetesMine.com in early 2005. The blog quickly grew to become a well-read news site serving the triple purpose of providing information, emotional support and patient advocacy. In her presentation, Amy will discuss examples of vibrant patient discussions, provide evidence of the political power of empowered patients and showcase a community initiative for improving quality of life for people with diabetes via technology and innovation: the DiabetesMine Design Challenge ©.
